History of Victoria House Tide Clocks

Victoria House Metal Works of New Hampshire produces handcrafted pewter-on-copper tide clocks and other decorative ware. Richard Reynolds is the owner and craftsman.

Richard Reynolds was stationed in England for three years from 1986.  It was there that he learned the craft of applying pewter images on the surface of copper.

It seems that a Craft Show was to be held on an up-coming weekend; Richard mentioned to his wife that perhaps he could find a metalworking craft there that he could learn and use as a retirement project.   Ann believed this to be a fantasy, but went along for the ride.  And, while she found all sorts of interesting gifts for the family, Richard did indeed find his retirement project.

An exhibitor (named Victoria House) was displaying Pewter-on-Copper gift items.  Richard approached the Craftsman regarding his becoming an American protégé.  The secrets for applying pewter images on the surface of copper involve the use of a stencil of the image to contain the powered pewter, and then fusing the pewter to the copper with a propane torch. This is similar to the original process for making electronic circuit boards.

So, in due course, this handcraft, which had been passed down for many generations in England, was passed across the Ocean. An American Victoria House was established in 1990. Richard elected to apply this unique craft to the fabrication of Tide Clocks, a useful instrument for anyone who uses the shore for almost any purpose.  Boaters, kayakers, fishermen, beachcombers, runners and almost anyone who visits or resides by the ocean shorline have a real use for these attractive gift items.

Victoria House Tide Clocks has been successfully showing these unique items at Craft Fairs up and down the East Coast for the past 17 years.  And now, the range of handcrafted products has been expanded to include decorative mirrors, bowls, coasters and trays.
